Since 1967, the Malayalam Department has been functioning as a part of Additional Common Language Studies. Dr. Anil Vallathol, Ex-Vice-Chancellor of Tunchathezhuttachchan Malayalam University, Dr. Umar Tharammel, Ex-HoD of the Malayalam Department at Calicut University and K E N Kunjahammed, Eminent Writer and Orator were the faculty members of the Malayalam Department at that time. BA Malayalam course was started at Sir Syed College on November 1,2013. Eight batches have completed the Malayalam UG degree course so far. However, permanent faculty members were appointed to the department only in 2021. BA Malayalam Core Course, BA/BSc/BCom/LRP Additional Common Language Courses, and Generic Elective Courses are currently being conducted under the Malayalam Department. The department provides an opportunity to study the Malayalam language and literature for the students of Taliparamba, a backward area of North Malabar, and other areas of Kannur district. The Malayalam department is implementing many activities for the development of language skills, literary studies, cultural upliftment, and career development of the students.

Milestones of the Malayalam Department

  • The Malayalam Department was established in 1967 as part of Additional Common Language Studies, coinciding with the college's founding.
  • The B.A. Malayalam course commenced on November 1, 2013.
  • In March 2016, the first batch of B.A. Malayalam students successfully graduated.
  • By 2023, eight batches have completed their B.A. Malayalam studies.
  • In 2021, the department appointed three new permanent faculty members.
  • In 2023, Srujila V P, a member of the 2020-2023 batch, achieved excellent (5 th position ) university- level results with a score of 90.63.
