Department of Chemistry Alumna Ms. Juhina Nisar Secures Prestigious MRESP Exchange Fellowship at Rice University, USA

The Department of Chemistry, Sir Syed College, Taliparamba, proudly shares the remarkable achievement of our alumna Ms. Juhina Nisar (M.Sc. Chemistry, 2021–23 batch), who has been selected for the Mehta Rice Engineering Scholars Program (MRESP) Exchange Fellowship at Rice University, USA. Ms. Juhina, who is presently pursuing her Ph.D. at IIT Kanpur, will join Rice University in January 2026 as part of this internationally competitive fellowship. The program provides an exceptional platform for young scholars to work in advanced laboratories, gain international research exposure, and collaborate with world-renowned scientists. A significant highlight of the fellowship is its generous financial support. Ms. Juhina will receive USD 2,500 per month for the five-month research period (January 19 – June 17, 2026), covering her living expenses, housing, insurance, and other research-related needs. In addition, the program facilitates travel and visa arrangements, ensuring scholars can focus entirely on their academic and research pursuits. Her selection for this fellowship is a recognition of her outstanding academic record, research aptitude, and perseverance. The Department of Chemistry takes immense pride in this accomplishment, which also reflects the strong academic foundation and research orientation nurtured within the department. The Department congratulates Ms. Juhina Nisar on this distinguished recognition and wishes her continued success in her Ph.D. journey and beyond.

On 27/02/2025 the Department of Chemistry, in association with the Kerala Academy of Sciences, Thiruvananthapuram, successfully organized a statewide program to celebrate National Science Day 2025. The theme of the event was “Empowering Indian Youth for Global Leadership in Science & Innovation for Viksit Bharat.”

The Department of Chemistry had the honor of hosting Dr. Maharoof Koyakatt, a distinguished alumnus of the 2015–18 Chemistry batch, who recently completed his PhD in Molecular Spectroscopy from Chiba University, Japan. The interactive session was held on 5th June 2025, and it served as a motivational talk for the undergraduate students of the department.

The Department of Chemistry, Sir Syed College, Taliparamba, marked a significant academic milestone with the successful conduct of CHEMIA–25, an intercollegiate conference showcasing final-semester M.Sc Chemistry projects. Held on July 15, 2025, the event commemorated 25 years of the postgraduate Chemistry programme at the college and celebrated the exceptional research journey of its students during the academic year 2024–25.

The Department of Chemistry, Sir Syed College, Taliparamba, organized an outreach program on June 10, 2025, in connection with World Environment Day. The program was conducted at Kurumathoor UP School with the theme “Life Below Water – Ending Plastic Pollution.” The event aimed to spread awareness among students about the harmful effects of plastic pollution and its impact on aquatic life. An awareness session was arranged to highlight the urgent need to reduce plastic use and promote eco-friendly alternatives.

Symposium: From Atoms to Well-Being

The Department of Chemistry, Sir Syed College, Taliparamba, organised a one-day symposium titled “From Atoms to Well-Being” on 22nd September 2025 at the college seminar hall. The technical sessions began with the first invited lecture by Dr. Sathees C. Raghavan, Professor of Biochemistry at IISc Bangalore, on the topic “Exploiting DNA Repair Defects: Cancer Therapy via Chemical Inhibitors”, chaired by Dr. Fazal Edakot. This was followed by the second lecture by Dr. Shivangi Sharma, Project Scientist (II), IISc Bangalore, who spoke on “From Bench to Preclinical Validation: Development of BCL2 Inhibitors as Cancer Therapeutists”, chaired by Mr. Muhammad Sayeed T. The final session featured Dr. Mujeeb Rahman P, Assistant Professor, GASC Kozhikode, who delivered a talk on “Chemistry of Well-being: From Medicine to Mood”, chaired by Dr. Sarayu Jayadevan.

As part of the Teachers' Day celebrations, the Department of Chemistry,Sir Syed College, Taliparamba, conducted the "Little Masters" programme on 08-09-2025. In this initiative, final year PG students took the role of teachers and conducted classes for their juniors.This programme allowed students to experience the role of a teacher, fostering leadership and teaching skills among them while honouring the spirit of Teachers' Day.

On 27th September 2024, the third-semester MSc Chemistry students (20 students) along with their tutor, Ms. Sarayu Jayadevan, and the Head of the Department, Mr. Muhammed Sayeed T, visited NIIST and RGCB in Trivandrum as part of their curriculum. The visit provided valuable exposure to advanced research facilities and scientific practices in the fields of material science, biotechnology, and chemical studies. Students had the opportunity to interact with experts, enhancing their understanding of research methodologies and applications. This academic tour greatly enriched their practical knowledge and inspired them to pursue innovative research endeavors.

The Department of Chemistry at Sir Syed College, Taliparamba, celebrated Teachers’ Day on 5th September 2024 with the unique "Little Masters" program. The Department of Chemistry at Sir Syed College organized a conference titled "CHEMIA" on highlighting the excellence in MSc internship achievements by fourth semester students. The event was inaugurated by Dr. Binumole P. Kuriakose, Principal In-Charge of Sir Syed College. Ms. Muhammed Sayeed T, Head of the Chemistry Department, presided over the function. On June 27, 2024, the Department of Chemistry at Sir Syed College organized an insightful interaction session for our final year BSc Chemistry students. Our esteemed alumni, Muhammad Rishad, who completed his BSc Chemistry degree from 2019 to 2022, shared his professional journey and current role as an Assistant Chemist at Qualitas Material Testing Laboratories in Abu Dhabi, UAE. He provided valuable insights into the various job opportunities available in laboratories and the essential skills required for these roles.

The Department of Chemistry at Sir Syed College is delighted to announce the remarkable accomplishments of our alumni, Laila Jabir and Juhina Nisar. Laila Jabir, who completed her MSc in Chemistry from 2021 to 2023, has been selected for a Ph.D. program at the prestigious Centre for Nano Science and Engineering, Indian Institute of Science, Bengaluru. Similarly, Juhina Nisar, also an MSc Chemistry graduate from 2021 to 2023, has been admitted to the Ph.D. program at the Department of Sustainable Energy and Engineering, Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur.

The Department of Chemistry at Sir Syed College, Taliparamba, in association with Molecular Connections Bangalore, conducted a "Campus Recruitment Drive - 24" for postgraduates in Chemistry and Organic Chemistry on July 16, 2024. The program was aimed at recruiting fresh MSc graduates as Scientific Analysts. The event was inaugurated by Dr. Ismail Olayikkara, Principal of Sir Syed College, with a warm welcome from Dr. Rajeena Pathoor, the program coordinator. Mr. Muhammad Sayeed T, the Head of the Chemistry Department, presided over the function. Prasath N from the HR department of Molecular Connections explained the job description and placement process, highlighting the roles and responsibilities of the candidates.

Faculty of Sir Syed College Granted with US Patent

Dr. Ashwini Kumar N, Faculty of DST-FIST Funded Dept of PG & Research Studies in Chemistry, Sir Syed College Taliparamba has been granted a US Patent. The invention was regarding the development of a novel lipid nanoparticle formulation for nucleic acid (mRNA) delivery. The patent right will expire in 2039. The technology was transferred to MODERNA THERAPEUTICS, BOSTON, USA.
