Book Talk: Series 2

Sir Syed College Hosts Book Talk on Dinnu George's Short Story Collection, 'Kra' Taliparamba: Sir Syed College hosted a "Book Talk" and "Face to Face" program with author Dinnu George on September 18, 2025. The event was jointly organized by Sir Syed College Central Library, the literary-cultural collective 'Vyazhavattam' of the Department of Journalism, and the Department of Malayalam. The discussion centered around Dinnu George's short story collection, "Kra" (????). Muhammad Safvan, Librarian of the Central Library, welcomed the gathering and emphasized the importance of such literary events. Dr. Haseena K P, Head of the Department of Malayalam, introduced the book "Kra" and highlighted Dinnu George's innovative approach to contemporary Malayalam literature. "Dinnu George's short stories are attempting to make a shift in the contemporary Malayalam short story. They are breaking the so-called notions about how a story should be written," she added. V H Nishad from the Department of Journalism commented on Dinnu's immersive writing style, noting that his stories offer readers a fantasy world and that solitude is a common theme among his characters. Dinnu George, who is also a faculty member in the Department of Malayalam, shared insights into his writing process, saying, "Language is my medium for expression. I am trying to translate my experience and creative thoughts into writing in the form of stories." "I tried to weave stories that are rooted in everyday life, focusing on the nuances of human emotions," said Dinnu. He also spoke about the challenges of writing as an art form. The interactive session included questions from students and faculty. Dinnu George discussed the references to the October Revolution in his stories (pointed out by Abdul Basith AKP), similarities of his narrative techniques to those of filmmaker Kim Ki Duk (as noted by Muhammad Niyas), and in response to a query by Muhammad Ladeed about the recurring themes of living things and flora and fauna in his stories, Dinnu said, "It all relates to my living experience and neighborhood in which I am living." When Shameel Sidique, a faculty member of the Department of Commerce, asked about the interconnection between the five short stories in "Kra", Dinnu George replied that the connection was an unconscious process. "My aim was to create a collection where each story stands on its own, yet resonates with a common thread of lived experiences," reveals Dinnu George. The event, held in the Central Library, drew around 100 participants including students, teachers, and faculty from across the college, reflecting the campus's rich cultural atmosphere.

Instead of plainly giving the words and its meaning, I wrapped each word with flash fictional stories associated with its contextual meaning.' When asked about the writing process Shamseer said he used to note down such words every day, to make it a fruitful effort. 'My friends in Kannur City, my relatives and friends had contributed immensely for the completion of this work'. The author expressed his enthusiasm for preserving regional dialects, highlighting the cultural value of words. To a query about future plans, Shamseer revealed that he is working on a sequel, having collected another set of colloquial words from Kannur city.
