Chalk Board Memories-Botany Retired Teachers Meet
Department of Botany of Sir Syed College organized a alumni meet entitled ‘Chalk Board Memories’ for the retired teachers of the Department. Inauguration of the Campus Science Forum
The Campus Science Forum at Sir Syed College was inaugurated marking a significant step in promoting scientific awareness and fostering a culture of inquiry among the students and faculty. The event began with a welcome speech by Dr. Sreeja, Chairman of the Campus Science Forum, who introduced the purpose and vision of the forum. The program was officially inaugurated by Prof. Ismail Olayikkara, Principal, Sir Syed College, who expressed his support for the initiative and emphasized the importance of science in shaping modern society. The event was presided over by Dr. Tajo Abraham, IQAC Coordinator of the college, who spoke on the role of academic forums in enriching the intellectual environment of the campus. Dr. Abdulsalam, AK, Assistant Professor of Botany, and Ms. Sneha C, Assistant Professor and Head of the Department of Forestry, shared their insights on the significance of scientific forums and the need for interdisciplinary collaborations in academic settings. A key highlight of the event was the seminar on "Scientific Temper in Daily Life," which was conducted by Dr. Ashwani Kumar N, Assistant Professor in the Department of Chemistry. Additionally, a Luca Calendar presentation was made by Mr. Pradeep, President of the Shasthra Sahithya Parishath, Kannur District. Mr. Girish Kumar E was awarded PhD Degree in Botany on the topic’ An integrated study on diversity of riparian angiosperms and algal components of Kuppam river, Kannur district, Kerala, India’. He carried his research under the supervision of Dr. Gayatri R Nambiar, Assistant Professor of Botany, Sir Syed College. Dr. Senthilkumar T, Professor, Department of Botany, Bharathidasan University, Tamilnadu was the Chairman and External Examiner of the open defence.

Plant Identification and updation of Name Boards
Dr. Sujanapal P, Principal Scientist from the Department of Silviculture at KFRI, visited the Botanical Garden of Sir Syed College, Horthus SirSyedicus, to validate the taxonomical names of the plants. He was accompanied by Dr. Sreeja P, Head of the Department, and Dr. Abdussalam AK, Assistant Professor of Botany Department. This visit aimed to ensure the accuracy of the botanical naming and classifications in the garden Horthus Sir Syedicus, enhancing its educational and scientific value.

Botany Association ‘BORBOLETA’ (2023-2024) was inaugurated by Mr. Muhammed Haneef, Assistant Professor of Botany, Govt. Brennen College, Thalassery. Chop Mix Win-Salad Making Competition
Bhoomitrasena Club and Botany Department of Sir Syed College jointly organized a salad making competing namely ‘Chop Mix Win’ for the UG and PG students of Sir Syed College in connection with the World Food Day Celebration. Invited Lecture on Frontiers in Biological Science
A frontier lecture was organized by the PG and Research Department of Botany on the topic ‘Exploring Research and Career Opportunities in India and Beyond’. Prof. Irfan Ahmad Ghazi, Department of Plant Sciences, School of Life sciences, University of Hyderabad was the recourse person. He delivered an insightful lecture on the various learning and job opportunities in and abroad India for the UG, PG and Research students of Biological Sciences.

District priority project Miyawaki Forestation in association with the Rotary Club of Pazhayangadi and Department of Botany Sir Syed College was inaugurted by Rtn. MD Dr. Santhosh Sreedhar, Rotary District Governor.
Mangroove Conservation Efforts @SirSyed
Botany Department and Bhumitra Sena Club of Sir Syed College jointly prepared 5000 mangrove saplings in the botanical garden nursery. The aim was to revive the degraded coastal wetlands of Kannur district. This is the first time in India that such an initiative is being started in a college. Mangrove saplings will be planted in a scientific manner with the help of the public in various Panchayaths of Kannur district. Wildlife Trust of India provides necessary instructions and resources for the same. Apart from this, interested students and teachers have the opportunity to prepare the nursery and engage in planting activities.

Ms. Aswathi V was awarded PhD Degree in Botany on the topic’ Phytochemical Characterization of Wild and Cultivated Legumes in Northern Kerala’. World Environment Day Celebration
World Environment Day was celebrated on June 5th of 2024 with the theme Land Restoration, Desertification and Drought Resilience. Smt. KS Deepa IFS, Chief Forest Conservator, Kannur was the chief guest. In connection with this many fruit trees were planted in the campus as well as students hostel.

Nutrifarm-Inauguration of Mint Plant Sale
Department of Botany, Sir Syed College has started a new initiative entitled “Nutrifarm” to raise the saplings of various medicinal, aromatic and crop plants with the help of students as part of the add on course. This year mentha plants were propagated and the harvest ceremony was inaugurated by Prof. Ismail Olayikkara, Principal of Sir Syed College.

HSTTP- Refresher Course in Biology
Sir Syed college hosted a 10 day residential refresher course in Biology for the higher secondary school teachers of Kerala from 16 to 25 February 2024. The course was inaugurated by Dr. Ashraf TP, Syndicate member of Kannur University. The course offered various theoretical and practical sessions on different topics related to Biology and was coordinated by the PG and Research Department of Botany of Sir Syed College. The Programme was jointly organized by the Higher Education Department, General Education Department and Directorate of Higher Secondary Education.
