The Department of Botany was established in 1976 and it is the first one in the science departments of this College to be upgraded to postgraduate status, in 1984. The department is recognised as Research Centre under Kannur University since 2004. For its privileged achievements over the years, this department is the best of its kind in the whole of the University of Kannur. There are 8 faculty members, 13 research scholars, two lab assistants, and one herbarium keeper and a gardner in the department. Angiosperm Taxonomy, Plant Physiology, and Biochemistry, Plant Tissue culture and Molecular Biology, Fungal Taxonomy, Environmental Science, Ecophysiology, and Microbiology are the thrust areas of research. The Department is also supported by DST-FIST Programme and is now equipped with modernised labs for undergraduate, postgraduate and research facilities. One of the best botanical gardens- Hortus Sirsyedicus- in Kerala is maintained under the supervision of the department.
